Nissan Patrol Battery Size Guide
Most Nissan Patrols take a large D31-case battery of roughly 90 to 100Ah. The exact rating and terminal layout depend on the generation, the engine and the year, and the Y63 has to be matched to the battery it left the factory with. The table below lists what each trim normally takes in this market.

What happens after the swap, by generation
Whether anything has to be reset or relearned once the new battery is in.
- Patrol Y62. No coding is needed on a Y62. The battery is swapped with a memory saver connected so the radio presets, seat memory and window auto-up survive; if power was lost before we arrived, the windows and idle are relearned at the car before we leave.
- Patrol Y63. The Y63 monitors its battery, so the replacement has to match the original technology and capacity and the battery sensor is reset after fitting. We confirm the exact part against your VIN before the van leaves.
- Patrol Safari. Nothing to register on a Safari. It is a straight swap, and we clean and re-protect the terminals and check the hold-down clamp, because a loose battery on washboard tracks shakes its plates apart.
- Patrol Super Safari. No registration required. If the car has a dual-battery setup or an isolator, tell us on the call so both batteries are tested — replacing one and leaving a weak partner beside it drags the new one down.
- Patrol Pickup. No registration required. The check that matters on a Pickup is the charging voltage under load, because an alternator worn by years of dust undercharges a new battery from day one.
- Patrol Y60. Nothing to register — the Y60 has no battery management at all. We test for parasitic drain and check the earth straps before selling a battery, because on a car this age those are the usual cause.
How to read a battery label
The terms that appear on a Patrol battery and in a quote, in plain words.
- D31
- The case size
- A Japanese-standard case about 31 cm long. It is the tray size most Patrols are built around.
- Ah (amp-hours)
- Capacity
- How much charge the battery stores. A Patrol sits at roughly 90 to 100Ah, about double a small car.
- CCA
- Cold cranking amps
- The current the battery can deliver to the starter. A large petrol engine needs a high figure.
- L or R
- Terminal layout
- The last letter of the code. It decides which side the positive post sits on, so the cables reach.
- AGM
- Absorbent glass mat
- A sealed battery with the acid held in glass-fibre mats. Handles deep discharge and vibration better than flooded.
- EFB
- Enhanced flooded battery
- A strengthened flooded battery that tolerates more charge cycles. Sits between standard and AGM.
- Load test
- The test that decides
- Measures how the battery holds voltage under a real cranking load, which a simple voltage reading cannot show.
- Memory saver
- Power during the swap
- Keeps the car's electronics alive while the battery is out, so presets and window settings survive.
Why the size is checked rather than assumed
A Patrol can be thirty years old and on its fourth owner. Batteries get replaced with whatever was in stock, trays get modified for a second battery, and the same generation was sold with different engines. So the label on the battery in the car is evidence, not proof, and the size is confirmed against the VIN before the van leaves. Fitting the wrong case leaves the battery loose in its tray; fitting the wrong terminal layout leaves the cables stretched or unable to reach.
A word on doing it yourself
A Patrol battery weighs well over twenty kilograms, contains sulphuric acid and can deliver enough current to weld a spanner to the body. Disconnecting it without a memory saver can also cost the car its settings, and on a Y63 the battery sensor has to be reset afterwards. If you are not equipped for that, have it changed by a technician. A swollen, leaking or hot battery should not be jump-started or handled at all: keep clear and call for help.
Patrol battery size questions
What size battery does a Nissan Patrol take?
A large D31-case battery of roughly 90 to 100Ah. The exact rating and the terminal layout depend on the generation, the engine and the model year, which is why the size is confirmed against your VIN, or read from the label on the battery in the car, before a replacement goes on the van.
Does a Nissan Patrol need an AGM battery?
Whatever the Patrol came with, or better. AGM can replace a flooded battery, but a flooded battery should never replace AGM. On a Y60, a Safari or a Y62 a standard maintenance-free battery is correct and AGM is an upgrade for a heavy accessory load. The Y63 monitors its battery, so its replacement is matched to the original technology and capacity.
Can I fit a bigger battery than the original?
A higher capacity in the same case size is usually fine and can help a Patrol that runs a fridge, lights or a winch. A physically larger case is not: the tray, the hold-down clamp and the cable lengths are built for one size, and a battery that is not clamped properly is shaken apart on rough tracks.
Does the battery need coding after it is changed?
Not on a Y60, a Safari, a Super Safari, a Pickup or a Y62. Those are swapped with a memory saver connected so the settings survive. The Y63 monitors its battery, so the battery sensor is reset after fitting.
How do I read the code on my Patrol's battery?
A Japanese-standard code such as 95D31L reads in four parts: a performance rank, a letter for the case's width and height, the case length in centimetres, and a final L or R for the terminal layout. If you send a photo of the label, the right replacement can be picked from it.
Not sure which battery yours takes?
Send a photo of the label on the battery, or the generation and year. The right one is on the van before it sets off.
